In 1949, the Communist Party of China (CPC) emerged victorious from a hard-fought civil war, establishing the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on October 1 of that year. The CPC set a 100-year plan to rejuvenate the nation and restore China to its rightful place in history. The target date set for the successful completion of the plan is October 1, 2049, the centennial anniversary of the PRC’s establishment.
2024 marks an important milestone: the completion of the first 75 years of the 100-year plan. By all the traditional economic yardsticks, there is no doubt that, over the past three-quarter century, the CPC has achieved tremendous progress in growing the Chinese economy.
The following table summarizes China’s GDP and GDP per capita for 1952 and 2023, respectively:
| 1952 | 2023 | ||
| Gross Domestic Product | billions CNY | 67.91 | 126,058.21 |
| Gross Domestic Product per Capita | CNY | 119 | 89,358 |

For many years, I have followed the impressive progress made by the CPC in moving the Chinese nation forward and greatly improving the welfare and well-being of the Chinese people. As we enter the final quarter century, the path is fraught with dangers as geopolitical rivals strive to thwart and hinder China’s progress.
As people of Chinese descent watch in earnest, this blog serves as my personal notebook as I seek to document China’s steady march towards the second centenary goal of building a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by 2049.
